Statement My process of art making explores improvised territory where rational systems emerge into uncertain destinations. I mine the world for materials, which typically live in one world but adapt easily to others. Each work I build develops out of the structural and visual qualities of the materials themselves; certain woods bend and carve differently, plastics have a unique color spectrum, wire and tape are connecting agents, while the computational power of digital technology allows for repeatable patterns. I combine these disparate materials with an eye on craftsmanship while allowing for “glitches” to upset my system of making. A created pattern quickly becomes out of my hands into other complex systems as its certainty of form is met with another set of variables. This can be seen in colors that create optical distortions, scale hierarchies that affect line weight, and codes that are inserted for repetitive disruption. This process of making enables me to step back and allow the work to transform on its own path.
